- Understand the role of the board in marketing and public relations strategies.
- Be able to assess when Strategic Planning is and is not appropriate.
- Understand how strategic planning differs on small, medium, or large boards.
- Understand board member roles in strategic planning.

- Mary Wissemann

Wellspring Consulting
Mary Wissemann has fifteen years of management consulting experience, spanning the corporate, nonprofit and public sectors. At Wellspring, she has worked on a broad range of projects related to redefining core strategies, strategic planning, growth strategies, revenue generation, organizational development, and alliances. From 1986 to 1988, and again from 1991 to 1998, Mary was with the Boston Consulting Group where her work focused on growth strategies and organizational effectiveness for healthcare and manufacturing firms.? She also managed several pro bono projects, including a study of business development opportunities in Chicago’s low-income communities. From 1988 to 1992, Mary worked for Shorebank Corporation, a unique bank holding company on the South Side of Chicago with a social mission to invest in low-income urban neighborhoods.� While at Shorebank, she consulted with non-profit and public clients on inner city economic development and managed a grant-funded effort to accelerate business development and job creation in a targeted Chicago neighborhood. She also spent two years as a loan officer with responsibility for originating and managing a portfolio of loans to small businesses and nonprofits. In addition to economic development and healthcare, Mary has a strong interest in education and the environment. After graduating from Wesleyan University, she taught high school math for two years, and she has continued in teaching as a volunteer with various literacy, ESL, and GED programs. She also supports numerous environmental causes and was employed as Associate Director of the Alliance for Environmental Innovation, a program of Environment Defense, after leaving BCG in 1998. Mary graduated from the Yale School of Management in 1988. She received a BA in history from Wesleyan University in 1982 where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in her junior year

Janet Bailey Associates
Janet M. Bailey has an extensive career spanning both strategic consulting and direct line management in both the corporate and nonprofit arts sectors. She is currently President of her own consulting practice, Janet Bailey Associates, which provides marketing, strategic, organizational, development, and communications consulting services to organizations in the arts and nonprofit sectors.� Recent and current clients include several of the major performing and visual arts organizations in Boston, along with a number of smaller arts groups in the Boston area and around New England. The client roster encompasses organizations engaged in theater, classical music, opera, dance, and visual arts, along with several performing arts facilities, multi-site arts festivals, and service organizations. Prior to starting her own firm in 1997, Janet served for five years as General Manager and Director of Marketing for the Handel & Haydn Society. Earlier in her career she spent five years working as a consultant with McKinsey & Company in their New York office and in several locations in Latin America, advising major corporations in a variety of industries on matters of organization and strategy. She subsequently served in several line-management positions with the Times Mirror Corporation, working as Operations Director and General Manager in two of Times Mirror’s cable-television subsidiaries. Janet has been extensively involved in the leadership of professional associations and volunteer activities throughout her career, and has served in the past as President of the Boston Arts Marketing Alliance, the Boston Ballet Volunteer Association, and the Boston chapter of Women in Cable. She currently serves on the Board of Directors and Chair of the External Relations Committee of the Community Music Center of Boston and on the Member Advisory Panel of Arts/Boston. She holds B.A. and M.B.A. degrees from Boston University, and is currently on the faculty of BU’s graduate program in Arts Administration.
