BVA Profile
Bruce Enders
BVA Consultant
“I support a worthwhile cause by working in the field I chose for my career – because I love it!”
After spending 25 years in the marketing division of General Electric, Bruce began consulting for both non-profit organizations and for-profit businesses. He joined the BVA program in 2005. Speaking of his BVA clients, he explains, “My job is to teach them marketing. Their job is to teach me about their program.”
Bruce’s passion for science made him a perfect match to work with the Traveling Science program at the Discovery Museum in Acton. After putting together a strategic marketing plan to expand the reach of the program, Bruce continued to work with the museum’s executive director to execute a wide range of marketing initiatives. In addition to facilitating increased awareness of the program through viral marketing and word-of-mouth, Bruce has helped the museum finetune its communications and website, as well as its core values and overall mission.
Peter Ames
BVA Consultant
“I work with non-profits I care about and find that clients take our projects seriously, and advice is implemented.”
Acting on a deep enthusiasm for the nonprofit world, Peter has been a consultant for a wide range of non-profit organizations throughout his career, both professionally and as a business volunteer. Speaking of his most recent BVA client, he says, “I like them so much that I’m hosting a dinner fundraiser for them at my house!”
As a BVA, much of Peter’s focus has been in helping executive directors and board members refine their governance and management practices. He has also developed The Expertise Matrix, an excellent system by which non-profit boards pinpoint the areas of expertise of existing board members, and then identify which specific types of experience to look for in new board members in order to best fulfill the organization’s mission.
Lee L. Reese
BVA Consultant
“I was looking for something that could satisfy both my business interests and my interest in the arts.”
Lee has long been an active patron of Boston’s rich arts and culture community. She sought out the BVA program in early 2007 when she was searching for new ways to lend her support. Becoming a BVA has allowed her to actively participate in the arts while sharpening her professional skills as a strategic planner.
During Lee’s first BVA engagement, she worked with the board of Project Think Different to develop a 5 year strategic plan. As part of her aim to solidify the vision of the organization, she organized a series of constituent interviews to learn how best to serve Project Think Different’s community. Lee also facilitated a 2 day board retreat focused on creating an actionable plan to achieve the organization’s vision, during which the group developed “5 Strategies to Make It Happen.” On her work with the organization, Lee says, “I feel that I achieved our objectives; it was fun to see the results crystallize around our goals!”
Maureen Salkin
BVA Consultant
“What I love is making things run smoothly. Anything I can do in this respect is very rewarding to me.”
Maureen spent 20 years managing theaters and performing arts organizations in Upstate New York until coming to Boston in 1996 to work with an executive search firm. Coming from such a rich background in the arts, “I wanted to keep my hand in theater,” she explains. She has been an active BVA for several years, and won the Arts & Business Council’s Volunteer of the Year award in 2002.
Maureen has guided many performance arts organizations through strategic business and marketing planning, board development, and operational planning. On her role in addressing these critical areas, she says, “I work very hard to help these organizations feel ownership in the ideas we come up with. Unless they participate in the solution, they won’t feel like they’re a part of it. I facilitate that process.”
